Best Egg Cooker Buyers Guide

Don’t rush out and buy an egg cooker before reading this guide first. Although you can’t really go wrong with the egg cookers we listed above, they all have different pros and cons to them.

In this section of the article, we talk about the different features and things to look for in egg cookers.

Do Egg Cookers really work?

An egg cooker, also known as an electric egg cooker, will do a great job making perfectly cooked eggs. It’s pretty much a single use kitchen appliance. However, it becomes really valuable if you happen to eat eggs often. If so, it could end up being one of the best appliances to buy.

Basically, it has a base with a heating element inside of it. You pour water in the base using an included measuring cup.

You then put your eggs in a special tray which goes inside of the egg cooker. Put the lid on and turn it on.

The kind of egg you want will determine what the water level should be. Many egg makers use different trays to cook eggs differently. Ther are boiled egg trays, omelette trays, and trays for poached eggs.

In my case, I eat eggs all of the time, so for me and my family, having an egg cooker is a no brainer.

We usually use it to hard boil eggs, which we can do fast, easy, with no cleanup, and have the great side effect of having eggs that are super easy to peel.

We sometimes use to make eggs that are poached or make omelets.

So yes, electric egg cookers do really work!

The best egg cookers have some kind of audible alert that lets you know when your eggs are done. Some of them will even have an automatic shut off feature to ensure that the device doesn’t burn itself out.

If you’re worried about missing the alert, don’t worry about it. You should know that these alerts are extremely loud buzzers!

See-Through Lid

Although the lid typically isn’t performance-related, many people do like have a clear lid that they can see through in order to keep an eye on their eggs. In my case, I think it’s interesting to see the first time, but I’m not really sitting there watching eggs cook. I don’t really care either way if it’s a clear lid or a stainless steel one.

One of the biggest, or maybe the biggest consideration for which egg cooker is best for you, is how many eggs it can cook at the same time.

The best egg cookers range anywhere from six to 12 eggs. 12 boiled eggs tends to be on the large side, with most egg makers coming in at around six or seven.

If you have a large family, though, then you should go for one of the 10 egg or 12 egg models. However, for most people, 6 or 7 eggs work just fine.

Automatic Shutoff

One unique feature for some of the best egg makers is that some of them have the ability to automatically shut off when they’re done.

This is kind of a big deal because it means that you don’t have to rush on over when you hear the buzzer. If you’re doing something else then you can take your time.

Egg Cooking Times

For the most part, cooking time won’t really vary much between egg makers. You’ll find that it averages around 5-10 minutes to cook your eggs depending on the model and how many eggs you’re making.

Of course, hard-boiled eggs take a little longer than soft boiled eggs.

Size and Weight

The majority of egg makers are coming in just around 1 pound of weight, so that means they’re easy to move around. Specifically, they’re easy to pull out of a cabinet, use for the day, and then put back in.

They also tend to be compact. So no matter how much room or how little room you have in your kitchen, chances are that you’ll be able to fit in an egg cooker.

Dishwasher Safe

Many parts of these appliances are dishwasher safe, which is great for making cleanup super easy. One thing to note, though, is that electrical components of any kitchen appliances are NEVER dishwasher safe.

So if an egg cooker says “dishwasher” safe on it, it means that the plastic parts like the lid or egg trays are dishwasher safe. The base is not and the heating elements definitely are not.

Almost all egg makers come with some kind of manufacturer’s limited warranty. For the most part, they’ll all last way longer than the warranty and they’re inexpensive enough that even if it only lasts you a few years, you’ll be able to buy another one with ease.

Remember, we’re not talking about a refrigerator, an oven, or an expensive blender. An egg cooker is a really reasonably priced appliance.

What is the best microwave egg cooker?

A microwave egg cooker is one that doesn’t work on your countertop and doesn’t need to be plugged in. It still uses water and steam to cook your eggs, the only difference is that instead of plugging it in so it heats up, you put it all together and put it in the microwave.

Microwave egg cookers cook much faster than electric ones, and yes, you can also boil, scramble, and poach them. However, egg cookers for the microwave don’t make eggs with the same consistency as electric egg cookers do.

Still not sure? We reviewed the Best Microwave Egg Cookers.

How do you make soft boiled eggs in an egg cooker?

Cooking soft boiled eggs in an egg cooker is exactly the same as making hard-boiled eggs, you just typically add less water so it cooks less.

Remember, all hard-boiled eggs once started off as soft boiled eggs before they hardened up!

Every egg cooker that I’ve seen has a soft, medium, and hard-boiled egg feature. So if you’d like to make soft boiled eggs, then all you have to do is use the provided water measuring cup to put the appropriate amount of water in them so that they stop cooking when your eggs are soft versus hard.

You’ll get a measuring cup specific to your egg cooker with every appliance. You’ll also get an instructional manual letting you know exactly how much water you need to add.

That’s what makes the water measurement aspect of an egg cooker so important. Cooking isn’t actually cooking, it’s steaming. And the amount of steam generated doesn’t just depend on heat, it depends on how much water is in the base.

How do you make hard-boiled eggs so that they peel easily?

The key to cooking hard-boiled eggs that you can easily peel really has nothing to do with how you cook them at all.

In order to get them to easily peel, you have to immediately take them out when they’re done and run them under super cold water. Or better yet, put them in a large bowl filled with cold water and ice.

This shocks the egg and causes it to slightly contract, making it easier to separate from the egg shell.

Allow them to sit in ice-cold water for 10-15 minutes for super easy peeling.

If you consistently get eggs that are extremely difficult to peel, I recommend keeping them in ice water a little longer each time.

Wrapping Up With The Best Egg Cooker

I eat eggs almost daily but I hate cooking eggs. An electric egg cooker allows me to poach eggs, cook omelets, make scrambled eggs, and cook a lot of perfect hard-boiled eggs at a time.

It allows me to do this in a way that’s convenient, super easy, fast, and with no cleanup.

Here at Kitchenista, we want to bring you kitchen tips and tricks to help you lead a healthy life. We believe that electric egg cookers can be a part of living a healthy lifestyle.

All of the egg cookers we reviewed had something special about them. Some had different features, some had different sizes, and some had different prices. However, they’re all high-quality kitchen appliances that will last you for years to come.
